Most Shopify founders pick a helpdesk the wrong way. They compare price tags for a week. Then nobody is hired to run it.
Here is the truth. The tool costs a few hundred dollars a month. The people who run it cost thousands.
This guide compares Gorgias vs Zendesk vs Re:amaze on price, setup, automation, and staffing. You also get a simple 4 part test called CREW to check if your team is ready for any of them.
The Short Answer
- Gorgias: Best when you get lots of tickets and want deep Shopify actions. You pay per ticket, not per agent.
- Zendesk: Best when you need many departments, phone support, and strict routing. You pay per agent. It needs an admin.
- Re:amaze: Best for small teams that want a low price per seat and live chat.
- All three: Fail without one clear owner.
How We Checked This
- Prices, trials, and ratings come from each vendor’s pricing page and Shopify App Store listing, checked on October 5, 2026.
- Gorgias overage fees and AI fees per resolution come from third party pricing trackers. Gorgias’s own page did not list them.
- Setup time estimates are rough and come from one reseller comparison.
- Team costs in our examples are assumptions. Swap in your own numbers.
Why the Tool Is the Smaller Decision
Let’s use real numbers. Say you run a store with 3 support agents.
Assume each agent costs you $3,500 a month, counting pay, tax, and tools. (Use your own number here.)
- Team cost: 3 x $3,500 = $10,500 a month
- Cheapest tool in our test: $87 a month
- Priciest tool in our test: $360 a month
- Gap between them: $273 a month
That gap is 2.6% of your team cost.
So picking the “cheap” tool saves you about $273. Hiring the wrong person, or no owner at all, costs far more.
This does not mean price is meaningless. It means price should be your tie breaker, not your starting point.
Pricing Snapshot (October 2026)
| Tool | You pay per | Starting price | Typical growth plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gorgias | Ticket | $10 a month for 50 tickets | Pro: $360 a month for 2,000 tickets |
| Zendesk | Agent | Support Team: $19 (annual) or $25 (monthly) | Suite Team: $55 (annual) or $69 (monthly) |
| Re:amaze | Team member | Basic: $29 a month | Plus: $69 a month |
A few notes so you are not surprised later:
- Gorgias says its helpdesk is never priced per agent. Its Shopify listing shows Starter $10, Basic $60, Pro $360, and Advanced $900. Trackers list overage at about $0.36 to $0.40 per ticket. Check the live page before you buy.
- Zendesk lists Suite Team at $55 per agent on annual billing. The Support Team plan is email and tickets only. Chat comes with Suite.
- Re:amaze also has a flat Starter plan at $59 a month for unlimited team members, capped at 500 responded conversations.
- Some older comparison pages still show Zendesk at about $49 a seat. Zendesk’s own page does not match that today.
Side by Side: Features That Matter on Shopify
| Gorgias | Zendesk | Re:amaze | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify App Store rating | 4.3 (706 reviews) | 3.5 (92 reviews) | 4.4 (180 reviews) |
| Free trial | 7 days | 14 days | 14 days |
| Order actions in the ticket | Refunds and order changes | Refunds and cancellations from the sidebar | Manage, change, and create orders |
| Channels | Email, SMS, chat, phone, social, help center | Messaging, chat, phone, email, social (Suite plans) | Email, chat, social, plus SMS and voice on Pro and up |
| AI | On every plan, pay per resolution | 5 resolutions per agent each month on Suite Team | 5, 10, or 20 resolutions per user each month by plan |
| Pricing model | Per ticket | Per agent | Per team member |
Ratings and review counts were read on October 5, 2026 and change often. A 4.3 or 4.4 score is not a clear win over each other. The 3.5 for Zendesk is lower, and its listing notes that it needs certain store setups.
Gorgias: Built for Shopify, Priced by Volume
Setup
- It is made for ecommerce. Gorgias says it offers the deepest Shopify integration as a Shopify partner.
- One reseller comparison estimates about 1 week to get live. Treat that as a rough guide, not a promise.
Automation
- Rules and macros sort tickets and send common answers.
- Gorgias says its AI Agent is on every plan, and you only pay when it resolves a conversation.
- Pricing trackers report $0.90 to $1.00 per AI resolution. They also report that the resolved ticket still counts as a helpdesk ticket.
Who must run it
- One person who owns rules, tags, and macros.
- Someone who watches volume. Trackers report that a billable ticket is any conversation that gets a reply from a person, a rule, or the AI. Messy workflows can raise your bill.
Watch out for: Repeat contacts. “Where is my order?” asked 3 times is 3 chances to pay.
Fix that with clear order tracking pages and good return rules. Our guide to ecommerce returns management shows how.
Zendesk: Powerful, but It Needs a Builder
Setup
- Zendesk is a general helpdesk, not a Shopify only tool.
- Its Shopify App Store listing shows 3.5 stars from 92 reviews. It also warns that Zendesk needs certain store setups and does not fit every Shopify store.
- Agents can process refunds and cancellations from the sidebar.
- The same reseller comparison that estimated Gorgias at 1 week puts Zendesk at 2 to 4 weeks. Again, a rough estimate.
Automation
- Triggers, views, and routing rules are strong.
- Suite Team and above add messaging, live chat, and a knowledge base.
- Each agent gets 5 AI resolutions a month on Suite Team. Extra ones cost $1.50 (committed) or $2.00 (pay as you go).
Who must run it
- A real admin. Someone who knows triggers, views, and routing.
- Without that person, Zendesk becomes a pricey shared inbox.
Watch out for: Per agent pricing grows with headcount. Add 4 agents and your bill moves fast.
Re:amaze: Small Team Friendly
Setup
- The Shopify listing shows 4.4 stars from 180 reviews.
- Agents can manage, change, and create Shopify orders from the support screen.
- Multi store support starts on Pro.
Automation
- Workflow rules, chatbots, and an AI Agent.
- AI resolutions per user each month are 5 on Basic, 10 on Pro, and 20 on Plus, per the Shopify listing.
Who must run it
- Works well for 1 to 5 people.
- Shift tools, custom roles, and staff reports sit on the Plus plan. If you plan to grow past a small crew, budget for Plus.
Watch out for: The flat Starter plan caps at 500 responded conversations. Extra packs cost $15 each.
Worked Example: 1,200 Tickets, 3 Agents
Here is what each tool costs on monthly billing. All math is simple and you can check it.
Gorgias
- Basic ($60 for 300 tickets) plus 900 extra tickets at $0.40 = $60 + $360 = $420
- Pro covers 2,000 tickets for $360
- Pro wins. Annual billing saves up to 17% per the Shopify listing, so Pro would be near $299
Zendesk (3 agents)
- Suite Team: 3 x $69 = $207 monthly, or 3 x $55 = $165 annual
- Support Team (email only): 3 x $25 = $75 monthly
Re:amaze (3 team members)
- Basic: 3 x $29 = $87
- Plus: 3 x $69 = $207
The flip point
Gorgias Pro at $360 equals about 5.2 Zendesk Suite Team seats on monthly billing ($360 divided by $69).
- Fewer than 5 agents and under 2,000 tickets? Seat pricing is usually cheaper.
- 6 or more agents on the same volume? Ticket pricing starts to win.
The AI Add On Is Not Free
Say 300 tickets a month get fully solved by AI.
- Gorgias: 300 x $0.90 = $270 (or $300 at $1.00)
- Zendesk (3 Suite Team agents): 15 are included. The other 285 cost $1.50 each = $427.50, or $570 at $2.00
AI also needs a human who writes the answers it reads. If your help pages are thin, the bot will guess or hand off.

The CREW Test: Is Your Team Ready?
Before you buy any helpdesk, answer 4 questions.
C: Capacity
- Count your tickets per month.
- Divide by what one agent can close.
- Example: if an agent closes 40 tickets a day over 21 workdays, that is 840 a month. 1,200 tickets means 1.43 agents. (The 40 a day is an example. Use your own data.)
- Add cover for days off and weekends.
R: Rules
- Name one person who owns macros, tags, and automations.
- No name means no owner.
E: Escalation
- Write down who approves refunds, who handles angry customers, and who handles disputes.
- Start with our chargeback management guide.
W: Weekly review
- Spend 30 minutes each week on the top 5 reasons people contact you.
- Fix the cause, not just the ticket.
- Track the right numbers with these support KPIs that predict retention.
Score it:
- 4 yes answers: pick a tool and go.
- 3 yes answers: pick a tool, fix the gap in 30 days.
- 2 or fewer: fix your team first. Any tool will disappoint you.
Which Tool Fits Which Team?
- 1 to 3 agents, under 500 tickets: Re:amaze Basic or Pro, or Gorgias Basic.
- 3 to 5 agents, 1,000 to 2,000 tickets: Gorgias Pro or Re:amaze Plus. Run the math both ways.
- 6 or more agents, many queues, phone: Zendesk Suite, with a named admin.
- Heavy repeat questions: Whatever tool lets you build the best order lookup and macro set. Then fix the cause.
Other Helpdesks Worth a Look
Not sure these three are right? Here are five more, with prices from their own pages (checked October 5, 2026).
- Richpanel: Helpdesk at $99 per seat on annual billing ($119 monthly). AI is billed by use, with a $200 monthly minimum.
- Help Scout: Free for up to 5 users. Paid plans start at $25 per user on annual billing. AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution.
- Freshdesk: Growth is $19 per agent on annual billing. Pro is $55. There is a 14 day trial.
- eDesk: Plans start at $39 a month on annual billing. Its AI costs $0.99 per outcome.
- Tidio: A free plan covers 50 billable conversations. Growth starts at about $49 a month for up to 2,000 conversations.
The same rule applies to all of them. Pick the pricing model that fits your ticket count and headcount. Then check the CREW test.
Switching Helpdesks: What It Really Takes
Already using a tool and thinking about moving? Plan for these steps.
- Export first. Save your macros, tags, and top 20 saved replies.
- Rebuild, do not copy. Old rules often hide old mistakes. Rewrite the ones you still need.
- Run both for a few weeks. Keep the old inbox open for late replies while the new one takes over.
- Retrain your team. Give each agent a one page cheat sheet.
- Check your numbers after 30 days. Compare response time and repeat contacts before and after.
This is where a documented process matters most. See ecommerce SOPs for remote teams for how to write one.
When Not to Buy Any of Them
- If you get roughly 100 tickets a month or less, a shared inbox may be enough. This is a rule of thumb, not a law.
- If your returns policy is unclear, fix that first. A helpdesk only shows you the mess faster.
Who Should Run It?
You have 3 real options.
- You. Fine at the start. It stops working once support eats your growth time.
- In house hires. More control, but US pay adds up fast. See US labor costs for D2C brands.
- A dedicated team. A team that works only on your store, follows your playbook, and owns the results. Read how an offshore ecommerce team works, and how it differs from a dedicated team vs agency.
If you go offshore, plan for time zones and write clear steps. These guides help:

5 Mistakes That Waste Your Helpdesk Money
- Buying the tool before naming an owner.
- Turning on AI before writing good help pages.
- Picking per agent pricing for a small team with huge volume (or the reverse).
- Skipping the weekly review, so the same ticket keeps coming back.
- Never writing down who approves refunds.
FAQ
Which helpdesk is best for a small Shopify store?
For 1 to 3 agents and low volume, Re:amaze or Gorgias Basic is usually the better fit. Re:amaze charges per team member, and Gorgias charges per ticket. Pick the one that matches your ticket count and headcount.
Is Gorgias worth the price?
It can be, if you have more tickets than agents and want Shopify order actions inside the ticket. It costs more when your ticket count climbs or repeat contacts are high.
Is Zendesk good for Shopify?
Yes, for larger teams that need phone, many queues, and tight routing. It works best with a named admin. It is less plug and play than Shopify focused tools.
Does Re:amaze work with Shopify?
Yes. Its Shopify listing says agents can manage, change, and create orders from the support screen. Multi store support starts on the Pro plan.
Is Re:amaze cheaper than Gorgias?
It depends on your ticket count. With 3 agents and 300 tickets, Gorgias Basic is $60 and Re:amaze Basic is $87. With 3 agents and 1,200 tickets, Gorgias Pro is $360 and Re:amaze is $87 on Basic or $207 on Plus.
What are good Gorgias alternatives for Shopify?
Zendesk and Re:amaze are covered above. Richpanel, Help Scout, Freshdesk, eDesk, and Tidio are also worth checking. Compare how each one charges before you compare features.
How long does it take to switch helpdesks?
Plan for several weeks, not days. Export your macros, rebuild your rules, run the old and new inboxes side by side, and review your numbers after 30 days.
How many support agents do I need?
Divide your monthly tickets by what one agent closes in a month. If an agent closes 40 a day over 21 workdays, that is 840. At 1,200 tickets you need about 1.43 agents, plus cover for days off.
